·         The proclamation of Emergency had been signed by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on June 25, 1975
·         21-month-longs
·         Hundreds of political leaders, activists, and trade unionists opposed to the Congress Party were imprisoned.

·         There was economic trouble like unemployment before emergency

The movements –

The Navnirman movement in Gujrat

-          The ruling congress party in Gujrat was notorious for corruption.
-          It continued agitation and fast unto death by Morarji Desai – in Gujrat 1975


The JP movement

-          The Bihar students followed suit in protests and they were lead my Jayprakash Soni (JP), the 71 year old freedom fighter. He encouraged the students to bycott classes.
-          Indira Gandhi this time did not give in to dissolving the assembly but declared emergency in stead.
-          President’s rule was imposed in the state.

George Fernandes was also involved for Railways protests against the government.
Raj Narain a socialist leader filed a petition in Allahbad high court claiming that she has used malpractices for winning elections.
-          Allahabad High Court declares Gandhi’s election to Parliament as null and void,
-          Supreme court too favoured the JP movement and the party people too wanted Indira Gandhi to be out.
After the SC statement, Emergency was declared, signed by the President. The reason she gave was – the whole subcontinent is destabilized.
