Citizenship Amendment Bill - the buzz of the month

In a nutshell The Citizenship Amendment Bill – the buzz of the month What works in favour of CAB? -           Persecuted minorities are being given shelter in a nation that has always welcomed and stood for secularism. For them it comes as a relief. -           Muslims belonging to the three countries – Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan won’t be given any shelter. If they are being persecuted within their ow homeland/community/religion it is their internal matter. -           Congress too in the past has set religion as their criteria for giving citizenship. The IAF air strikes

Why did the strikes happen? In response to the Pulwama attack for which the terrorist outfit JeM has claimed responsibility, the Indian government has taken a pre-emptive action and so a non-military operation. This is a new doctrine of security that India has adopted, also in line with its diplomatic standpoint that the attack was to eliminate the terrorist outfit and not Pakistan. It is only working to support the categorical commitment made by Pakistan in 2004, when then President of Pakistan made to the then PM of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee on the sidelines of SAARC   summit. It comes across as a befitting reply to Pakistan and to its notion that India would not strike against it as it had the No First Policy. No nation can sit quietly in the face of repeated terror attacks. What can be the consequences? As famous journalist Swati Chaturvedi puts in her blog –  “The  Mirage jets  returned to India within minutes but have changed India's sec...
What’s the tussle between RBI and the Government? Yeah so it’s CBI vs. government and then the RBI versus government. Ø The first flashpoint - government wants a special liquidity window for the Non-Banking Finance companies. The liquidity window or discount window would allow NBFCs to borrow money from the RBI in case of lack of funds.. Non-Banking Finance Companies are companies (NBFCs) registered under Companies Act 1956 are engaged in business of loans and advances, acquisition of stock and shares etc. They do not engage in agriculture, industrial activity or sale or purchase or construction of immovable property. The working and operations of NBFC are regulated by RBI. Ø Secondly, the government has proposed a supervisory body for the RBI which has several of its nominees. Opposition alleges of interference by the government into internal functioning of the Central Bank which had been so far taking its own decisions. Ø Government also wants the RBI to...

The Rohingya Crisis

Image
Who are Rohingyas? Why are they in the news? Image source - The New York Times Rohingya crisis in simple words - Rohingya Muslims are the refugees sheltering in India. Refugees are the people who flee from one country to another seeking escape from either a war or political oppression, religious persecution (torturing) or maybe because of a natural disaster. Rohingyas basically are a Muslim minority who reside in the Rakhine state, which is also called Arakan in Myanmar/Burma. They are considered as “stateless entities” as the Myanmar government says that they do not ethically belong to their country so they do not have any legal protection.   Also, there’s violence against them from the native communities who are not ready to accept them as co-citizens.  In Myanmar, these people are considered refugees from Bangladesh. So they are fleeing Myanmar for safety. Rohingyas are considered to be living in the Arakan since time immemorial. Since hundred...
