Citizenship Amendment Bill - the buzz of the month

In a nutshell

The Citizenship Amendment Bill – the buzz of the month

What works in favour of CAB?

  • -          Persecuted minorities are being given shelter in a nation that has always welcomed and stood for secularism. For them it comes as a relief.

  • -          Muslims belonging to the three countries – Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan won’t be given any shelter. If they are being persecuted within their ow homeland/community/religion it is their internal matter.

  • -          Congress too in the past has set religion as their criteria for giving citizenship. India was partitioned on religious lines when Congress was in power. So this isn’t anything new.

  • -          People of the north east have been taken care of as there are regions within the ‘Inner Line Permit’ which have been exempted from the CAB implementation.

  • -          Clause 6 of the Assam accord - which says that the people of Assam will get legislative, cultural and administrative protection for their cultural identity – will insulate Assam from the adverse effect of CAB.

  • -          Indian Muslims have nothing to fear. (Muslims who have documents to support their citizenship status)

What doesn’t –

  • -          Persecuted minorities should be welcome irrespective of their faith or religion – that’s the very ethos of Indian constitution. Secularism defines the social fabric of India. Discrimination on the basis of caste and religion is theocracy, forms the basis of a ‘Hindu Pakistan’(as claimed by Shashi Tharoor) and is against the pluralism of celebrated Indian democracy.

  • -          There are many persecuted minorities within Islam like – the Islamias, Shias, Ahamadias, Qadianis who are being persecuted and should be provided shelter.

  • -          The Muslims who have been living in India since past 10 to 11 years and more are living in fear that they will be driven out of the country for lack of documents proving their nationality.

  • -          Why not include the Hindu Tamils in Sri Lanka who are also living in fear and need shelter from persecution.

  • -          It is a weapon for the vote bank and works on the ideology of creating a ‘Hindu Rashta’.

  • -          Indian state was founded on the idea of equality.

  •  Assam says

  • -          CAB will bestow citizenship to a lot of illegal immigrants
  • -          Hindus from Bangladesh will swamp indigenous communities
  • -          The locals say their cultural identity is under threat
  • -          There has already been an influx of immigrants from 1951 to 71.
  • -          Only 7 out of 33 districts of Assam are protected under the ‘Sixth Schedule Areas’ of the Constitution. For the rest, CAB is applicable.
