Digital India

Digital India Program–

This was the program which was launched by the Indian government in July 2015 with the aim of –
  • -          Availability of high speed internet
  • -          To facilitate e-governance
  • -          For digital empowerment

There were both positive and negative results of the program –

-          India became the second largest market of smart phones in the world.
-          Number of internet users and e-governance went up as per UN reports.
-          Digi-locekrs, which allows for storing important documents online got good amount of users.
-          Many ministers became active on social media and have direct connectivity with the public.
-          BHIM app and UMANG app and MODI app were launched for online payments and for better connectivity with the government.

-          There were programs like ‘gramin digital saksharta abhiyan’ which was launched to make the rural population digitally literate.
-          Free public wi-fi hotspots were made available.
-          E-nam service was launched for the farmers to connect digitally

But there was also criticism of the campaign and its execution

  • -          Economists say that the e-governance is still to grow
  • -          There’s a digital divide between rural and urban India, which needs to be addressed also between the young and the older population.
  • -          Analysts say that the digital awareness could be due to the changing global trends and the rise in the telecom sector and not necessarily because of this program.-          Many times digital literacy cannot be achieved without primary education, so digital literacy is still a challenge.
  • -          Rural and small villages still have the fundamental problem of lack of electricity which hampers penetration of the campaign in these markets.
