Augmented/Virtual Reality
Augmented Reality explained simply -
It’s a technology that you can connect to your PC, tablet or
smartphone or even a glass so that you can better view the real world..the
world that you are seeing right now..
It combines the real world with the digital /virtual information
generated by AR (augmented Reality) supportive equipment. It ‘augments’ or enhances the user experience
of seeing the world.
If your smartphone has AR technology..it will
act as a magic mirror to the real world. It will enhance the quality of the
audio/video other imagery that you are seeing right now and it can also
introduce virtual objects or 3D models in it, which you can see through your
phone.

It dates back to 1962, when cinematographer Morton Hil, created 'Sensorama', which was a simulator with visual, sound, vibration and smell.
First real world application was in fighter jets for the heads up display, which allowed pilots to aim their weapons better.

There are many sight-seeing apps, which use AR to enrich
travel experience. It can include information about activities happening around
the place, events coming up, nearby attractions etc.
For example, you can point your camera to a building to
display its history or estimated value.
The potential use of this technology is being done through mobile
gaming (e.g in Pokemon Go). These games utilize actual physical surroundings to
either chase or shoot game objects like Zombies or Pokemons.
It is expected to bring revolutionary changes in Medicine and Education too.
It is basically a major advertising tool to capture user attention, retain and engage them.
It is replacing user manuals, audio tours etc. Companies like Ikea and Mitsubishi, Google glasses flaunt its use.

You have tools to support this technology –
AR viewers – gives a 3D view to an object
AR games – combining of real surroundings and computer
generated gaming objects.
AR browsers – to give contextual information.
Various AR supporting apps are available on the online stores
for purchase.
In spite of its mesmerizing use, it faces obvious criticism - of distraction and more than that seeing every natural thing with a digital vision, if the technology catches on or if and when the software manufacturers get serious about it.
